Ballymacelligott

Greyhound Breeding

The Herlihy family of Meenathee connection with greyhounds goes back to 1949 when Michael Herlihy’s brother-in-law Patrick Breen of Caher gave him a bitch off of ‘Tremandous Treasure’.

The following year ‘Tremandous Treasure’ had a great achievement in winning two 32 all-age cups, namely the Iveragh Cup in Killorglin & the All-Age in Ballyheigue all in the space of a few weeks.

When retired for breeding she produced a bitch named ‘Tremandous Measure’.

When bred to ‘Blarney Champion’ she produced 2 trial stake winners, ‘Billy’s Blarney’ & ‘Bad Measure’.

‘Billy’s Blarney’ owned by Mary Herlihy went on to win the Kingdom Cup in Tralee in 1958.

‘Bad Measure’ who was owned by Bruno Healy of Gurranemore won a trial stake in Brosna in the same year

When ‘Bad Measure’ was mated with ‘Jerrys Slipper’ she produced the 1965 Oaks winner namely ‘The Limit’ which was owned by Dick Lawlor, Rathanny.

Paddy Herlihy

The tradition to the present day is being carried on by Paddy Herlihy who owned many good coursing and track dogs including ‘Whydoyouask’ who ran up the 1998 Coursing Deby in Clonmel.

Ballymacelligott continues the tradition of producing great coursing & track dogs with the success of Liam Dowling on winning the Track & Coursing Derby & the Coursing Oaks on four occasions.
